Hair Removal 101: 5 DIY Waxing Kits To Buy And How To Use Them
Yup, DIY waxing is a life skill.
Before the pandemic, going to our favorite waxing salons to get rid of unwanted hair was part of me-time. With health protocols in place, however, planning a “self-care day” is no longer as easy as before. Thankfully, you can DIY almost anything in the 21st century, and that includes at-home hair removal!
Before you get that razor and waxing kit, however, it’s super important to learn the basics of DIY hair removal, as this saves you from a painful sesh or even damaging your skin. If you’re curious as to how you can wax at home, here’s everything you need to know!
How does it work?
Compared to shaving and plucking, the waxing process includes the application of a sticky substance to the skin, which facilitates the removal of the hair strands, including the roots. However, waxing can be a bit more painful than shaving and plucking, but its benefits outweigh the cons: you’ll have less regrowth, fewer ingrown hairs, and it exfoliates your skin as well.
Prepping your skin
It’s crucial to prep your skin before getting down and dirty with your waxing kit to avoid infections, burns, and abrasion.
Before waxing, make sure to trim your body hair only if necessary (as it can be painful if the hair is too long), but do remember that it needs to be at least a quarter-inch long for the wax to hold onto it. Then, exfoliate your skin with a mild scrub or loofah to remove dead skin cells. Two days after exfoliation, clean the area with a mild antibacterial soap to remove germs, sweat, and oil. You can proceed with the waxing sesh after drying.
Time to wax!
While most DIY waxing kits have instructions on the packaging, here’s a general guide on how you can remove unwanted hair on your own:
- Make sure to choose a waxing kit that’s gentle and safe. It is suggested to use sugar wax for those with sensitive skin.
- Prep your skin. If you’re using hot wax, heat your wax in the microwave for 30 seconds, and use a popsicle stick to apply a bit of wax on your wrist. Make sure it’s not too hot before using it!
- Now it’s time to apply the wax on your skin. It’s important to note that you should spread the wax against the direction of your hair growth. Wait 10 seconds before putting a wax strip over it, then pull it off in the same direction of the hair growth. Repeat this step until you have removed all the hair in the area.
- After waxing, grab a soothing balm and apply it on the waxed area. However, this isn’t required!
