“Whatever today brings, I hope it brings you coffee first, so you know what’s going on,” goes a funny meme on the internet. This quarantine has really highlighted the need for morning coffee (or a calendar, or a clock), especially for those of us who are true and blue coffee lovers. Why, even non-coffee drinkers have probably found that they actually enjoy a hot cuppa.

Since we can’t really go on a Starbucks run every morning, we found a way to help you get your caffeine fix without leaving home. How, you ask? Well, build your own little coffee station!

Jackie, a 26-year-old marketing consultant, realized that she spends around Php 15,000 for coffee shop lattes every month, not including the croissants that came with them or the gas consumed driving to different coffee shops.

“The coffee shop runs quickly add up, and the next thing you know you’re spending a big chunk of your sweldo na pala,” Jackie shares. “It was not sustainable for me, lalo na mahirap ang buhay ngayon. So I decided to invest in a coffee station instead.”

Jackie says that building a coffee station was not as easy as it looked at first, especially since there are a lot of products to choose from in the market. “I was overwhelmed at first, because honestly, I did not know anything about coffee (except drink it). A few Google searches here and there really helped me along the way.”

Here is a step-by-step guide if you want to build your very own coffee station at home!

Tip #1: Find the perfect spot.

For some, this can be right on their kitchen counter or dining room, while others invest on a separate cabinet to store their goods. Jackie suggests building your coffee bar in a place that you see right away in the morning. “I placed [mine] beside my microwave, along with all my mugs. I want to be able to see it every morning to brighten up my mood, but that’s just a personal preference,” she says.

Tip #2: Choose the right coffee machine for you.

Not all coffee machines are made equal. They all have their own pros and cons, and it really depends on your own taste and preference.

Manual Espresso Machine

Most coffee shops use manual espresso machines, which makes it a staple in producing the best-tasting coffee. However, using one can be time-consuming. If you want to feel like a true barista though, this machine is right for you!

Coffee Brewer

Going back to the basics, a coffee brewer is the most famous among at-home coffee stations. It’s easy to use and gives you amazing results. The only downside though is that it leaves little room for creativity. But if you love the taste of black coffee, then getting a basic brewer would be perfect for you!

A tip from Jackie is to buy whole beans instead of the usual preground coffee available in stores. By using a grinder, the whole beans will bring a lot more flavor to your coffee!

Automatic Espresso Machine

Having an automatic espresso machine is convenient for work-from-home coffee lovers, as it gives you quality coffee without having to do all the work. These machines usually cost higher than manual coffee machines, though, but they’re totally worth it!

Pour Over

You don’t need electricity to make pour-over coffee – just freshly ground coffee, a filter, and a pour-over dripper. You pour hot water on the coffee and let it drip, allowing you control over how strong you want your drink to be. It’s an essential for your coffee nook, especially if you love DIY.

French Press

A French press is a manual coffee maker with a built-in filter. It produces flavorful coffee by pressing down the filter, with the coffee grounds immersed in hot water. Take note: it’s good for making tea too!

Tip #3: Display your mugs and other accessories.

A coffee nook would not be complete without aesthetically pleasing mugs displayed in a neat and orderly manner. You can store them on your coffee cabinet or have them on a hanging coffee cup organizer to give more of that coffee shop vibe!

Now you’re ready!

Now that you have got the key pieces and accessories ready, the next step is to make amazing coffee. Building a coffee nook is an investment, but in the long run, you might find yourself spending less than you would on your daily coffee shop runs! Happy brewing!
